Anyone who has been driving a Tesla for a long time will certainly have encountered the problem of the software crashing. Software errors are very rare, but it is important to know how to solve the problem without losing too much time.
This short guide is about this problem. We differentiate between the two variants of Tesla restart and explain everything you need to know to be able to restart your Tesla.
A distinction is made between the soft reset and the hard reset.

Tesla Restart: Soft Reset
If you have problems with the Tesla screen, a Tesla soft reset is usually sufficient. This only resets the interface and restarts it. This means that this type of reset can also be done while driving.
It is important to note that when performing a soft reset while driving, both the speedometer and the autopilot of your Tesla will be unavailable for a short time. This procedure is therefore only recommended in an absolute emergency.
Model 3 and Model Y
Here you have to hold down the two rotary wheels on the steering wheel for 15 seconds

After about 30 seconds , the Tesla logo will appear on a black background. The software will then boot up again and after a few more seconds the screen should be usable normally again. The Tesla reset is then complete .

Model S and Model X
The same procedure applies to the current Model S and X. Just note that this also restarts the smaller display in front of the steering wheel.

Older Model S and X
In older Model S and X models, the large touchscreen display in the middle can be restarted using the same technology. However, the driver display behind the steering wheel must be restarted separately to resolve any problems.
This works on the same principle. However, in this case, it is not the scroll wheels that are pressed, but the two buttons above them.
These are the buttons for voice input and the button for skipping a song. The reset can also be carried out while driving, but this causes problems as no content or data is displayed and is therefore not recommended.

Hard Reset
If the problem is not solved by the soft reset and nothing has happened, you can also easily perform a hard reset. This briefly interrupts the connection to the 12 V battery, which not only switches off the screen but also the entire vehicle electronics. This restarts the entire system and the computer.
You can activate this feature with the following clicks :
In Settings, click on "Vehicle"
"Security"
"Turn off"
Then you have to wait about 2 minutes. You have to be in park position for this, of course. During this time you are not allowed to operate any doors or buttons
After 2 minutes, you can wake up your Tesla and start it up again by applying the brakes. After that, your problem with the vehicle should hopefully be solved.
The problem is still not solved?
In this case, it is definitely best to first look in the manual for your Tesla and then contact Tesla customer service . If there are any problems, they will come to your home to solve the problem with the system or something similar. Below we have linked the manuals for the Tesla models.
