The problem that many people accuse electric cars of is that they have a poor and short range. Electric cars are worse in terms of range, especially compared to combustion engines.

It is now clear that this argument is gradually becoming less and less relevant and less important. But it also depends on the type of electric car. The battery capacity and the manufacturer as well as the body construction and weight all play a role.

Teslas always do very well when comparing ranges among electric cars, as the company can simply offer the best overall package thanks to its focus. Despite this, there are still various tricks with a Tesla that can help you get even more range out of your electric car.

In the following, we briefly compare the different range specifications in the Tesla range universe and then reveal tips for extending the range.

The WLTP range, short for "Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure", plays a crucial role in evaluating the efficiency and environmental impact of vehicles, especially electric cars.

This standardized test procedure aims to provide more realistic and reliable data on vehicle performance, including maximum range on a full battery charge.

For buyers and owners of electric vehicles, the WLTP range provides a more important and practical assessment of how far they can drive their vehicle under typical everyday conditions without having to recharge.

This promotes acceptance and confidence in electric vehicles by reducing potential range anxiety and setting realistic expectations.

However, the WLTP procedure has also been criticized because, despite the efforts, the measurement data is rather optimistic. Therefore, in addition to the WLTP range, we also provide a more realistic range below, which is always reduced by between 15% - 20% .

There are, of course, various small ways to improve the range, all of which together have an effect worth noting:

The so-called "one pedal driving" is the highest level of recuperation in a Tesla. With one pedal driving, if you drive correctly, you only need the accelerator pedal, as the recuperation can bring the car to a standstill.

You can imagine recuperation a bit like a dynamo on a bicycle. Recuperation is a process in electric cars in which the kinetic energy of the vehicle is recovered during braking and converted into electrical energy.

This energy is then used to charge the battery, improving efficiency and increasing the vehicle's range .

This recovery can be set to different levels. The highest level gives the highest recovery.

A very obvious way to extend the range is to drive more efficiently. Especially with Teslas, which are all very powerful, it makes sense to drive slower and accelerate more gently to improve the range.

For Teslas, we recommend using the "Casual" mode, which can be set in the vehicle settings under Controls > Pedals & Steering > Acceleration .

This reduces the power. You can also set a maximum speed.

As mentioned above, casual, defensive driving is crucial for good fuel economy. Autopilot can do this much better than a human, so it's advisable to use your Tesla's autopilot or cruise control.

This is particularly worthwhile on motorways and longer stretches on country roads. By using the autopilot at speeds between 100 and 120 km/h on the motorway, it is easier to reach the Tesla's stated range.

A tip that even combustion engine drivers know is to check and maintain the tire pressure. If the tire pressure is lower, the tire wears more and so does fuel consumption.

Of course, the air conditioning or heating plays a major role in consumption, especially in the cold winter or hot summer. Of course, in normal operation it is not necessary to use the air conditioning very little in order to keep consumption low.

But if you only have a few kilometers of range left, it is advisable to switch off the air conditioning.

If you are driving alone, it makes more sense to turn on the steering wheel and seat heating rather than heating the entire interior.

Especially in summer, the interior of a Tesla tends to heat up very quickly. The many large windows make it very easy for the sun to heat up the interior of the vehicle - and not just if you have a black vehicle.

This sunshade is ideal if the car is left outside for a long time in the summer. The heat protection protects the interior from high temperatures. It fits in the windshield of both the Model 3 and the Model Y.

The additional thermal insulation can optionally be pulled over the sun protection.

In the case of the Model Y, the sunshade is two-part and foldable. The sunshade can be easily attached to the roof lining and thus helps to keep the interior cooler in the summer months.

As with the set for the Model 3, the thermal insulation can be pulled over the cover to provide optimal insulation in both summer and winter.

The range of Tesla electric cars can be improved through various measures. This includes efficient driving, for example by using “one pedal driving”, which recuperates kinetic energy during braking.

Using the autopilot on highways also optimizes the range. Correct tire pressure and appropriate use of the air conditioning are also important. In summer, sunshades help keep the interior temperature low, which also saves energy.

These methods help maximize Tesla's stated range, measured according to the WLTP standard, in real-world driving conditions.
