When deliveries began in October 2022, many Tesla customers received vehicles without any parking sensors. After a year of lockdown and delays in deliveries, this led to a lot of frustration.

In the months that followed, more and more people told us that they would not buy a Tesla again until the Tesla Vision Update for Park Assist actually came out and helped with parking as promised.

Almost over a year later, for this year's Christmas update, Tesla is now delivering a new software update for the Model 3 and Model Y, as well as the Model S/X, with a solution to this problem. Let's take a look at what exactly that means.

Tesla Vision Update What’s new?

With the latest software update, Tesla has fundamentally changed the way the screen is displayed when parking. By eliminating the sensors, everything is now shown in a 3D scheme on the left-hand side (vision only). When you reverse into a parking space in driving mode, the two lines that you know from the camera are now also shown on the left in the 3D visualization as a parking aid.

Further changes with the update are as follows:

  • Even more vehicles in the area are visualized than with ultrasonic sensors

  • The distance is not indicated in meters or centimeters, but in colors. The redder it gets, the closer you are to an object

  • Lanterns, walls and people are better displayed and recognized

  • The elevation profile in the surrounding area is displayed precisely

Field report - What do Tesla drivers say?

There are already some Tesla drivers who have tested the Tesla Vision changeover with their Tesla Model 3 and other Teslas and the feedback has been positive so far. The distances are recognized well and the technology definitely works better than in the past.

Of course, as with all software updates, further situations still need to be tested, such as bad weather or a non-functional camera.

However, with the Tesla Vision Update, the vehicle has finally received a long-awaited upgrade, which many customers who do not have ultrasonic sensors would have wanted much earlier.

In the first tests, the parking assistant for reversing has improved in particular. The visualization and the "STOP" message help to park the vehicle without any problems.

However, when it comes to radar sensors, Tesla Vision takes some getting used to, as the distance to the wall is no longer given in centimeters, but simply the "STOP" signal comes.

We therefore recommend driving with caution. Tesla has installed the "STOP" signal in such a way that if you hesitate a little you won't drive straight into the wall, so there is still a little space.

Tesla front camera

Of all the cameras, the front camera is the one that has caused the most problems because the viewing angle is not there and the camera in the windshield cannot see everything that was taken by the ultrasonic sensors.

With the Tesla Model 3, parking may still be pleasant in many situations, but especially with the Model Y, the function of a front camera and the ability to measure accurate distances is an absolute must. Many videos have already shown that objects that previously appeared in the system without any problems using ultrasonic sensors could not be detected in this way.

The new update shows a better image, as mentioned above there is a "STOP" signal. However, you should still be careful on low curbs. A test here shows that you can drive over them, but the "STOP" sign comes a little later.

Whether the system now also measures the height of the curbs and gives a warning signal later when overlapping with the front of the car is possible remains to be seen and must be tested further. We recommend leaving a little more distance here so that in the worst case scenario you don't scratch the front underbody.

Summary

Recognizing objects has not worked well in the past, but now works very well with the new Tesla Vision Update. The parking aid, which should have been available much earlier, is one of the basic assistants. Tesla has now finally fixed the problem and made many owners who rightly voiced criticism happy.

It remains to be seen what impact the update will have on the autopilot system and then on FSD Beta in the future. We will continue to follow the experiences of Tesla owners in the USA who are already using Tesla FSD Beta.
