From July 7, 2024 , there will be a new EU regulation for new cars registered in the EU. This includes many innovations that have already become commonplace for Tesla drivers. These include, for example, precise tire pressure monitoring or the active lane keeping assistant, which is always included in the basic equipment of Teslas, or the reversing assistant with reversing camera. However, there are also some innovations that the car manufacturers and of course Tesla have to prepare for. In the following article, you will find out what Tesla expects and what you can expect if you order a Tesla from July 2024.

Important : Since this regulation came into force, it has been about new registrations . This means that it is not just about type approvals, but ultimately about every new car sold by a manufacturer, even if it is a 2023 model year or earlier.

The changes

Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) / Intelligent Speed Assistant (IGA)

As soon as a Tesla exceeds the permitted speed limit, the vehicle alerts the driver to this fact with an acoustic or visual warning on the display. However, the Tesla does not actively intervene in the journey by braking or reducing power. The driver is responsible for the speed. And this is exactly the function that will be mandatory from now on. However, since the feature has been used in Teslas for some time, it is nothing new. The system can also still be switched off despite the EU regulation, but as before only for the current journey and not permanently. But that is also already known.

In order for the intelligent speed assistant (ISA) to work smoothly, up-to-date maps and precise traffic sign recognition are essential. This suggests that a great deal of focus is now being placed on updating the maps. Sign recognition has often caused frustration among Tesla drivers recently.

The frustration of Tesla drivers

The frustration comes from the fact that Tesla's sign recognition never seemed to be fully developed. For one thing, the camera data does not reliably recognize the signs.

On federal roads and motorways, however, the recognised signs are always overwritten by the stored map data, which is often even worse and cannot take into account speed limit changes due to the traffic situation. This means that most people no longer rely on the displayed speed limit.

However, the mandatory ISA system in the European Union could now lead Tesla to focus on and improve sign recognition again. The map data should also now be updated more quickly thanks to the ISA system.

This means that Tesla drivers can expect benefits from this directive, at least in the medium term, and at some point they may even be able to rely on traffic sign recognition to comply with the speed limit.

fatigue and attention warning

From July 7, 2024 , every newly registered car must also be fitted with a fatigue and attention warning system that visually and acoustically alerts the driver to any possible fatigue. This has also been integrated into Teslas for some time and is a constant source of discontent.

If you are also annoyed by the warning, we have a great, inexpensive alternative for you. We offer a small camera cover that you can simply stick over it. From now on, you have the option of covering or uncovering the camera again with a simple sliding mechanism if you want.

emergency brake lights

Emergency brake lights, also known as adaptive brake lights, are a helpful system to alert other road users of sudden braking. During heavy braking, the brake lights flash in rapid succession or light up more intensely to warn following vehicles and prevent rear-end collisions.

These have been available in Teslas since a software update at the end of 2022. Since July, they have been mandatory in every new car.

Various assistance systems

The EU regulation makes different assistance systems mandatory for new cars:

  • emergency braking assistant

The emergency braking assistant is an important safety system that can save lives in critical situations. It continuously monitors the distance to the vehicle in front and warns the driver if a rear-end collision is imminent. If the driver does not react in time, the assistant automatically initiates emergency braking to prevent the collision or at least reduce the impact speed.

  • reversing assistant

The reversing assistant is an important assistance system that makes reversing easier and safer. Using cameras and sensors, the system detects obstacles behind the vehicle and warns the driver acoustically or visually.

  • Active Lane Keeping Assist

The active lane keeping system increases safety by keeping the vehicle in its lane. It detects lane markings and intervenes if the vehicle unintentionally leaves the lane by gently counter-steering or warning the driver. This system can help prevent accidents caused by leaving the road or collisions with other vehicles.

However, Tesla has already installed every assistance system mentioned here in its cars, so nothing changes for the Tesla driver.

black box (EDR)

From July 2024, the accident data recorder, also known as the "black box", will be mandatory in all newly registered vehicles in the EU. This will then anonymously record various parameters such as speed, braking behavior, steering angle and airbag deployment.

In the event of an accident, the data can then be read out in order to reconstruct the events more precisely and better understand the cause of the accident. The aim is to increase road safety through improved accident analysis and to prevent future accidents.

This has also been installed in Tesla cars for a long time and can be read using certain programs and technology.
