door emergency opening
An accident, the 12-volt battery is damaged, the electrical circuit is interrupted - and the door is stuck! A nightmare scenario, but not impossible. How do you get out of your Tesla in such a case? An emergency door opening is essential.
The front doors
If you're sitting in the front, the solution is simple. All Tesla models have a lever in front of the window regulators that allows you to unlock the door manually.
Put your hand under the window regulator of the driver or passenger door. Pull the lever up and the door will open manually.
The back doors
The emergency release is somewhat hidden on the rear doors. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, you have to proceed differently:
- Model 3 & Y: Look at the bottom of the door compartment for a removable insert. There is a cord behind it to pull.
- Model S: Slide the carpet edge under the rear seats to access the release cord.
- Model X: Remove the speaker cover in the door to locate the release wire.

The emergency release on the rear doors is not exactly intuitive – Tesla has also recognized this and improved the mechanisms in newer models.
There are even accessories for Model 3 and Y that allow you to open the doors with one hand. But be careful: This simple unlocking while driving could be tempting, especially for small children.
