The Tesla Model Y is currently the most popular electric car in the world and the best-selling vehicle in Europe. This article will cover all the details about the new Tesla Model Y, which will be launched in 2024.

You can find an overview of the changes to the Tesla Model 3, which are expected to also be included in the Model Y, in our blog article.

The Tesla Model Y has been produced at the Gigafactory Grünheide since April 2022. The processing problems have now been resolved and weekly production is scheduled to exceed 10,000 vehicles by the end of 2023.

At the same time, electromobility is developing rapidly and what was new in 2022 will already be overtaken by new technology in 2024. It can be assumed that Tesla will launch its facelift Model Y in 2024. This also depends on the progress of Cybertruck production and the launch of the Model 3 facelift.

In September, the Tesla Model 3 received a facelift and the first vehicles were delivered to customers at the end of 2023. At the same time, Tesla is starting production of the Cybertruck in Austin, Texas, and due to the high demand, is placing its absolute focus on a fast and successful production of the Cybertruck.

It is assumed that Tesla will begin switching production for the Chinese New Year, which is on February 20, 2024. This is due to the quiet period in China and the holidays. This approach has also already been observed in the factory in Shanghai.

Once production has been switched over, the new Tesla Model Y could be launched in China and thus in the entire East Asian region as early as March. The Gigafactory Shanghai exports to many countries, apart from the USA and Europe.

In Germany and Europe, the release can be expected in the third quarter, once the Gigafactory Grünheide has been converted. The start of the conversion of the production line there will take place after Shanghai.
Tesla will probably never convert more than one production line at a time, as this would have a severe impact on quarterly results.

However, Grünheide should still come before the USA, as was also seen with the new Model 3. This would be due, among other things, to the fact that e-car subsidies are no longer available in Germany, for example, and Tesla will therefore have to reduce the sales price and costs. The facelift will achieve this. In addition, Tesla has hardly any competition in the USA and can therefore take its time.

Conversely, this may mean that discounts on the existing generation may be available as early as the beginning of the second quarter.

The success of all manufacturers depends on continuous development. The technology in vehicles is developing rapidly. An electric SUV like the Model Y may have left the competition behind in 2022, but by 2024 the technology could already be outdated.

The pace of innovation in batteries and charging technology will continue to be high until the end of the decade, when development slows down. What matters is not what the top speed or performance of the model is, but how cost-effectively it can be produced.

In recent years, Tesla has further developed the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3 can no longer be compared to the first generation from 2018. So there are only a few years between them in which the technology of electric cars has developed rapidly.

Customers are now demanding improvements. The market is developing very quickly, whether in China, the USA or Europe. Tesla will of course not reveal any information about the facelift, but we have the opportunity to go into more detail about the changes to the Model 3. As before, Tesla will try to install as many of the same parts as possible in the Model Y and Model 3.

To better understand possible changes to the Model Y, the Model 3 can currently be used as a reference. The following changes are expected here, which will also affect the Model Y.

  • New battery (Long Range & Performance variant)
  • New interior equipment
  • New exterior
  • New cameras
  • New steering wheel
  • New versions in the configurator

We will now go into each feature in more detail and see what exactly that means when waiting for a new Tesla Model Y.

The focus is often on range, but this is unlikely to change much. Tesla has very good data sets that show how far and how often people drive their cars. A vehicle often travels fewer kilometers than many people think.

Many brands are still focusing on larger batteries in their vehicles. There will only be minor adjustments to Tesla models in the future. Tesla will produce a new battery in Grünheide. This 4680 cell will be cheaper and will allow Tesla to sell its Teslas even cheaper in the event of a price war.

Tesla sees the focus on costs for electric cars and will still try to offer a longer range with the new battery. The competition already offers good ranges with their electric SUVs and so Tesla will certainly follow suit with a facelift in the same category.

So for 2024, there will certainly be a newer and better battery for the Model Y Long Range and Performance Auto. The Model Y rear-wheel drive, on the other hand, will be equipped with the same BYD battery.

Unfortunately, the number of seats will not change. Many customers are still hoping for a Model Y with 7 seats, but this version has been discontinued worldwide and will probably stay that way.

According to initial information, Tesla will probably do away with the current dashboard and door trims, which are made of imitation wood, in favor of a more modern design. Tesla will work with a new material here, which gives a higher-quality material feel.

According to the latest information, the 15-inch touchscreen will not change, which is also due to Tesla trying to reduce costs so that prices can be lowered. Scaling up production and selling more and more electric cars is a top priority.

The trunk has very small changes between the Shanghai and Grünheide versions, but we are currently not expecting any further changes to the trunk. The loading volume will most likely remain the same, more details on this later .

Many customers want seat cooling and there are already initial indications of it, but this information has not yet been confirmed. It would not harm the comfort of the vehicle and would counteract the image of a reduced interior if Tesla were to actually bring out this update.

To date, hardware 4 is only installed in vehicles on the US market, but with a facelift of the Model Y, production in Germany will definitely also get an upgrade. The new hardware ensures better camera quality and, in conjunction with new cameras, will be able to implement Tesla Vision even better.

Tesla Model Y new cameras

Tesla caused a lot of excitement by removing the parking sensors, and many forums were filled with lively discussions about malfunctions in the parking pilot. With the Model Y facelift, we expect new cameras for Tesla Vision to make parking easier. A new camera has already been spotted on the front of the Model 3 Highland project. That would be exactly where the blind spot is currently causing major problems.

It is an update that many are expecting for their Teslas. The current software solution is not satisfactory for most drivers.

Tesla Model Y new steering wheel

The Tesla Model Y has a standard steering wheel in all versions, including the Performance model. Despite the high price of the Performance model, there is no option to change to a different steering wheel.

With the Model 3 facelift, it will quickly become apparent that there will be a new steering wheel that resembles the standard steering wheel of the Model S. At the same time, the turn signals and gear lever will be removed from the steering wheel.

Both features will find their place in the same place as in the Model S and Model X. It's no surprise that Tesla is making this change, as it likes to put the same components in all models to reduce the number of parts.

Tesla Model Y new versions?

The Tesla Model Y is available in a total of three different versions. They differ in terms of range and sportiness. The equipment in the vehicles, however, is the same in all versions.

With a new Tesla Model 3, more versions could come onto the market, which would also increase the Model Y selection.

Since Tesla has set itself the goal of selling around 20 million vehicles per year by 2030, it is of course urgently necessary to increase the supply and further reduce prices.

Tesla could start down this path with a stripped-down Model 3 and would offer this vehicle at a competitive price. A price in the region of €35,000 - €38,000 gross in Germany could be possible as early as 2024 after the first wave of orders.

The Model Y rear-wheel drive is currently offered for just under €45,000 and would certainly be adjusted. With such a strategy, Tesla would appeal to more customer segments and at the same time achieve its ambitious sales targets.

Tesla Model Y Facelift - Dimensions

The Tesla Model Y is very popular in its current size, so the question naturally arises whether the dimensions will change.

We can say from experience that the storage space, the side compartments in the trunk or the exterior mirrors may undergo slight changes. However, these are only a few millimeters.

Here you can find the dimensions such as height, length and width. These come from a Tesla Model Y Performance from Grünheide.

  • Length: 4751 mm
  • Width: 1921 mm
  • Width with mirror: 2129 mm
  • Height: 1624 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2890 mm
  • Trunk volume: 854 L
  • loading volume max. 2158 L
  • Front trunk volume: 117 L

Tesla Model Y 2024 with FSD Beta in Europe?

There are already initial indications that FSD Beta will be introduced in Europe in 2024. An acceleration of the process in the EU is already underway and could allow Tesla to use the software to drive its electric SUV autonomously. The software and assistance systems must of course continue to be monitored by the driver.

Compared to the US market, European customers have to wait a long time for FSD Beta. However, with the new cameras and Tesla Vision, there is a good chance that it will be introduced in Europe soon.

Summary

The Tesla Model Y is the most popular electric car in the world. There is now a very wide range of electric cars to choose from, but no other car can catch up with the Model Y in terms of sales figures. It is expected to be the best-selling vehicle in the world by the end of 2023.

There are many rumors about possible adjustments to the Model Y. As far as the Model Y is concerned, it will be exciting to see which new batteries will be introduced and how quickly they will charge at the new Tesla V4 charging stations.

The positive news for the Model Y facelift is that the vehicle is produced locally in Germany and, unlike the other Tesla factories around the world, the German factory is not currently making any other model changes.
