Tesla surprised the automotive world on October 11 with the unveiling of its long-awaited robotaxis, the Cybercab , at its "We, Robot" event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Tesla CEO Elon Musk drove onto the stage in one of the futuristic vehicles, a sporty coupe with gullwing doors and a continuous light bar, presenting the company's vision for the future of mobility.

Cybercab

The Cybercab, which was presented in two versions - a sporty coupe and a spacious van - is a fully autonomous vehicle that does not require a steering wheel or pedals at all. The design is striking and futuristic, with large wheels and an aerodynamic shape. It is reminiscent of a mix of the Cybertruck and the Model 3, but with an even stronger focus on futuristic elements.

Musk used the presentation to highlight the benefits of autonomous driving. He emphasized the increased safety compared to human drivers, which is to be achieved by eliminating human error. Autonomous vehicles would not get tired, would not be distracted and would always choose the optimal route, said Musk. This would lead to increased efficiency and at the same time reduce the number of accidents on the road.

The cheaper taxi

Another key argument for the Cybercab is the low operating costs. Musk stated that a ride with the Cybercab should be significantly cheaper than with conventional taxis or ride services. He mentioned a price of around 20 cents per mile. By comparison, an average bus ride in the USA costs around one dollar per mile. This would make the Cybercab not only an environmentally friendly, but also an extremely cost-effective alternative to existing mobility options.

Musk announced that Tesla plans to start producing the Cybercab before 2027. The price of the vehicle will be under $30,000, making it significantly cheaper than most current Tesla models. Musk explained that this will be made possible by the simpler design of the vehicle, without a steering wheel, pedals and traditional controls, as well as by mass production.

However, the Cybercab is not the only vehicle that Tesla plans to use as a robotaxi. Musk explained that the existing Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X models as well as the Cybertruck will also be used as autonomous taxis in the future. These vehicles are expected to be available as robotaxis as early as 2025. Tesla is relying on its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, which is already used in Tesla vehicles and is continuously being developed further.

FSD News

At the "We, Robot" event, Tesla presented not only the Cybercab but also further advances in the field of autonomous driving. The company showed demonstrations of its FSD technology, in which Tesla vehicles were able to master complex traffic situations independently. Musk emphasized that Tesla is a leader in the field of artificial intelligence and that the development of the Cybercab is an important step on the way to an autonomous future.

Conclusion

It remains to be seen whether Tesla can achieve its ambitious goals and actually bring the Cybercab to the streets before 2027. The next few years will show whether Tesla can turn its vision into reality and whether the Cybercab will revolutionize mobility in the future. If Tesla manages to overcome the technological and regulatory hurdles , the Cybercab could fundamentally change public transport and the way we get around.
